The Mail app on iPad gives you a natural new way to see your email. Hold iPad in landscape for a split-screen view showing both an opened email and the messages in your inbox, each with a two-line preview of its contents. That makes it easy to get through lots of email quickly. When you want to focus on a single email message, turn iPad to portrait. The email message automatically rotates to fill the screen, so you can concentrate on its contents. When you’re ready to compose a new message, a single tap reveals a large onscreen keyboard with keys that are practically the same size as a notebook’s. Because it’s software based, the iPad keyboard switches between landscape and portrait orientation with a turn. It even accelerates your typing by tracking what you type, and suggesting words, correcting spelling, and inserting punctuation automatically.
iPad displays rich HTML email, with images and photos appearing alongside text. When you receive an email attachment, you don’t have to save it and open it with another app. Just tap to view it right then and there. iPad works with most standard file and image formats, so you can rotate, zoom, and pan your PDFs, iWork files, and Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files. You can even save pictures to the iPad photo library with a tap.
The Safari web browser on iPad puts the Internet in your hands — literally. View whole web pages in portrait or landscape on the large Multi-Touch screen with vibrant color and sharp text at a size that’s actually readable. When you rotate iPad to landscape, the page you’re viewing rotates, too, then expands to fit the display. With iPad, navigating the web has never been easier or more intuitive, because you use the most natural pointing device there is: your finger. Scroll through a page just by flicking up or down on the screen. Double-tap a section on a page to enlarge or shrink it. Or pinch to zoom in or out. When you touch and hold a link, Safari shows you the URL so you know before you go. There’s also a handy thumbnail view that shows all your open pages in a grid, so you can quickly move from one page to the next. You can sync your bookmarks from your Mac or PC, and add even more right from your iPad. A handy bookmarks view makes it easy to access your favourite sites. Google and Yahoo! searching is built in, so it’s easy to find what you’re looking for.
Calendar on iPad keeps your busy life beautifully organized. View your calendar by day, week, or month. See everything in a list. iPad changes views with a tap or a turn. In portrait view, you can see an entire month or the details of a single day. Rotate iPad to landscape, and you’ll find a list of the day’s activities on one side and your detailed schedule on the other. iPad makes it easy to focus on what you’re doing now, even while you plan for what’s next.
You have an iPad, a computer, and an iPhone or iPod touch. How do you keep all your calendars straight? It’s easy in iTunes. Connect your iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch to your computer, and iTunes can sync every meeting, event, birthday, appointment, and reminder in every calendar application you use: iCal, MobileMe, Google, Microsoft Outlook, AOL, and more.
With iPad, you can do more with your contacts than ever before. Put a photo to a name, so you can find someone at a glance. Add an email address and you can send a message with a tap. Or add birthdays, anniversaries, and important notes to any contact. You can even set a reminder that’s saved to your calendar. Scroll through Contacts with a flick of your finger. Or use built-in search to find a name fast. You can even group contacts (for example, “colleagues” or “book club”). Turn iPad to landscape and you see your complete contacts list and a single contact simultaneously. Need directions? Tap an address inside a contact and iPad automatically opens Maps.
